Still Hungry After A Free Lunch?
While walking a beach in Florida I noticed the shifting sand underneath my feet. The tide would come in and go back out taking the ground below me and I found myself struggling for balance. The thought occurred to me, how are small businesses keeping afloat during these rough economical times? Like the sand with the tide, businesses have to refocus and evolve.
One of the advertising trends I’m seeing in our industry is price slashing and free trial offerings. We have never given away answering service for obvious reasons. For one it is not good business practice for us. Our business depends on revenue to pay for advertising; employees; errors and omissions insurance; equipment and phone lines. For another, it is not fair to our loyal client base. And my third point, why give quality service away that we work so hard to perform?
Just keep in mind when thinking about participating in a "free" or "cut rate" service package, this answering service is making up the difference somewhere. I’m not saying they are all mediocre but the old adage "you get what you pay for" will certainly apply. For examples of red flag advertising terms see this Better Business Bureau article.
